The Wasp and the Caterpillar

wasp and the caterpillar In the past few weeks my mind has been opened up to this whole new world of caterpillars, butterflies and host plants.

I had no idea that butterflies are attracted to different types of flowers and will lay their eggs on the leaves, giving the caterpillar the proper food it will need to grow and chrysalis (turn into a chrysalis? I don’t even know the proper wording) and then turn into a butterfly. Certain flowers will draw certain butterflies.

It has been amazing to learn about, and fun to go butterfly egg hunting.wasp and the caterpillar

Thanks to a patient friend that has been sharing her enjoyment of this with me, I am seeing a whole new world.

One of the things I recently learned is that wasps are a predator of caterpillars.

And a few days later, for the first time in my life I witnessed this – a fact of life that has occurred millions of times through the ordinary exchange in the insect world.wasp and the caterpillar

The thought struck me that this has likely occurred before my eyes in times past. My eyes failing to see something I did not yet understand.

I have probably been told of this natural food chain. My ears failing to hear something I wasn’t yet drawn to.

But when a friend showed me the beauty of her butterfly garden, and the care she takes in preserving the life of each butterfly egg she finds, my interest in caterpillars was tweaked.
Her passion, her genuine love, her understanding left me interested in learning more about caterpillars.

Caterpillars.

Something I have never before given much thought or care to suddenly became something of great interest to me.

I have scoured my garden for eggs. I have looked up names of butterflies that have danced through my garden. I have purchased and planted host plants.

All because a friend living out her every day life shared.wasp and the caterpillar

And so this day that I observed a wasp eating a caterpillar I was fascinated and captured it in pictures – because when you learn something new and observe it in action it is all fresh and exciting and you are eager to share the new found passion. wasp and the caterpillar

And the point I want to make is this – what if that which is a part of our every day was shared with others?

Not by standing up on a platform with a message to deliver to a room full of weary listeners, but because our life is our platform and Christ is our message and He has transformed every aspect of it and we share what we know – whether much or just a little – of what we know of the goodness of God and how it has changed our life?

Sitting around a table sharing a meal, or reclined around a living room with coffee, or running into a friend at the grocery store – what if we were eager and ready to share of how God was working and moving currently in our life?

What if by sharing of the goodness of God in our lives we open someones eyes to the fact that He is a good God.

We have had the great privilege of this. Of sitting cozy in a living room and sharing with a neighbor a provision God had made for us and the elderly man, with tears in his eyes, stating that he did not know God was that good.

Something he had never given much thought or care to, suddenly became of great interest to him.

What if our passion, our genuine love, and our understanding left others interested in learning more about that which we cared most about?

James 1:19-22
Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger;
for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.

Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
